Fijian authorities reported the first case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Lautoka yesterday as the country braces for the next stage of containment following news that the patient has been isolated and is under careful medical supervision.

Several safety measures were announced by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday afternoon including border restrictions from midnight.

Mr Bainimarama also said Fiji was food secure and that there was no sense “running to the market and buying up massive amounts of goods”.

“(People) can take comfort knowing that an abundance of vital cleaning and hygienic products are locally produced,” he said.

The Prime Minister said Fiji would not cut itself from imported goods and other essential items.

“We are heading into a difficult period. But in this moment of challenge our national unity cannot run in short supply.

“No one should act in fear or in panic, we must all act out in the love we hold for our fellow Fijians.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said it was working with the Government on efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

On its Twitter account, WHO said it was also working with other Pacific Island countries and partners to prepare and respond.

“Early detection and rapid response, including educating communities, are critical,” WHO said on Twitter.

Preventative measures to reduce your risk of COVID-19:

  1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitisers;
  2. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth;
  3. Cover your cough and sneeze with tissue or an elbow, and;
  4. Keep over 1m distance from others – avoid shaking hands, kissing and hugging.
